E-Learning Language Arts Class for May 29th

Good morning! Today is the 8th-grade graduation and clap out! We would love it if you could participate in the clap out up at school at 11:45. Have Mom or Dad bring you up to school at about 11:30 to get in the car line. I know some of you will be attending because you have siblings who are graduating.

We have 4 more days of e-learning for the school year.

Kudos to all of you who did your best on the i-Ready Reading assessment yesterday. If you did not complete your assessment, please do so as your first assignment this morning. Overall, I am VERY pleased with both individual and class results.

Assignment #1:
Complete the Literary Techniques/Poetic Devices quiz posted below. Do not use your notes or the Internet to complete your responses. You are on the honor system. When you complete the quiz, please submit your responses.

Today is also a catch-up day for all of your missing and/or late work. Check Google Classroom and PowerSchool to make certain you have completed all of your assignments. PowerSchool goes down today at 3:30 so that teachers can start writing comments. I will try to get the grade book updated today and tomorrow.

Happy Friday!

Due:

E-Learning Language Arts Class for May 28th in Google Classroom

E-Learning Language Arts Class for May 28th

Today you will only have your i-Ready Reading assessment for Language Arts class. Please take your time and do your best work. I will be monitoring your progress online. Make sure you take the test in a place where you will not be distracted by noise, siblings, or other media (like your cell phone). If you rush through the test, I will reset your work and you will have to start over.

You normally have 90 minutes of Language Arts class on Thursday. If you need more time to complete the test, you may do so. All of your other teachers know that you are taking this test today, so they have not scheduled any mandatory online classes, although, you may still have work to complete in those classes.

Remember, your Literary Techniques/Poetic Devices final test is tomorrow. You still have access to the practice Kahoot.

Do you best!

Turn in your Character Poem final. You should have run the draft by me first. I only have approved drafts checked in for about half the class as this point. Please make sure you look at your Assignment Reminder Checklist, make any revisions, mark as complete, and share with me. You might have to share this one as a Google Doc. That should be fine. I have added a link to an analyzed poem if you are still having difficulty with the concept. It is the same example I emailed to you yesterday.

Assignment #2:
Watch my message below and create a mini book review for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Include the following items in your review: your name, the book title, the book author, a brief summary, your favorite part(s), one of the themes (or author's messages), a rating of how many stars out of five, and why you would or would not recommend this book to other middle schoolers. You have 1 minute and 30 seconds of recording time.

Make sure to include ALL of the items above. Have fun! Flipgrid has some new features. You should be pros at using Flipgrid by now.

E-Learning Language Arts Class for April 27th in Google Classroom

E-Learning Language Arts Class for April 27th

Good morning! Happy Monday.

Since April is National Poetry Month, we are going to work on some poetry this week and continue reading our novel as well. Now, I know what you're thinking. Some of you might think you don't like poetry. Well, if you listen to music, you are listening to poetry, as the lyrics of songs are just poetry set to music. Poetry helps us see the world from a different perspective if we just take the time to listen to the author's message.

Assignment #1: (5 minutes)
Watch the YouTube video of the poem "Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me Too." It's a little strange, but Shel Silverstein wrote quite a bit of silly poems just to entertain his audience. Then, watch the YouTube video of Mr. Keating's class. He takes poetry a bit more seriously, and he definitely wants to challenge his students to find meaning in the words.

Assignment #2: (40 minutes)
Watch the Introduction to Poetry: Poetic Devices and Literary Terms PowerPoint presentation and take note on the guided notes handout posted below. When you have completed this study guide, mark it as completed and turn it in to Google Classroom. We will be adding more items to this list at a later date.

BRAIN BREAK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBQCgjo1QTU

Assignment #3: (45 minutes)
Complete at least 45 minutes of i-Ready Reading practice AND pass at least one lesson. You should have this assignment completed by tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM.

I will be checking in just in case someone is taking an unusual amount of time to complete the assignment. Work on i-Ready Reading practice for 60 minutes. Please complete at least two lessons. I will check your progress on the i-Ready site. You should already have your user name and password saved in your computer and/or written down in your planner.

Read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for pleasure, and enjoy their adventure. You do not need to annotate or take notes. Later, we will go through the story together, analyze the plot, and discuss the literary techniques. For now, I just want you to enjoy reading. Read as much as you like, as I am not assigning page numbers. I know that, once you begin, you will want to keep going, especially if you are following along with the audio book.

I have found an audio version by a narrator with a lovely British accent, which is appropriate because C. S. Lewis (the author) was British. Happy reading!

E-Learning Class for March 18th in Google Classroom

E-Learning Class for March 18th

After watching your Flipgrids, I came up with a few new ideas for e-learning. I have decided that, although you may still read your SQUIRT book, I would like you to begin reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe just for pleasure. (I wish I could italicize the title but am not able to do so on these directions.) Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy are on an adventure, and this entire e-learning experience and uncertaintly in our world is a kind of adventure as well.

So, read the story for pleasure, and enjoy their adventure.
