E-Learning Religion Class for May 27th

Good afternoon! This week we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, which is considered to be the birthday of the Church. We also associate this feast with the tongues of fire that appeared over the heads of the apostles when they were told to go out and spread the Word. Tongues of Fire represent the Holy Spirit and are often considered to be a symbol in our Church for those who receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Assignment #1:
Read the Pentecost Bible Story posted in the link below. Then, scroll down to the Take the Online Test link. Click on the link. Enter your first name only in the appropriate box. Then, enter the Class Code c5qx (case sensitive). Take the Tongues of Fire test and submit your answers.

Assignment #2:
Color the flame on The Story of Pentecost sheet linked below. In the space above the flame, write how you can spread the Word. When you have completed the assignment, take a picture and upload your photo to Google Classroom.

Happy Birthday Church! Spread the Word!

Blessings to you on this fine Monday!

The month of May is celebrated as the Month of the Virgin Mary, our Blessed Mother. In the Catholic faith, Mary is venerated during May through special services and traditions such as May Crowinings, where people gather to pray and crown a statue of Mary.

For centuries, the Blessed Mother has appeared to the faithful all over the world, requesting devotion and promising comfort. There have been countless sightings reported throughout the ages, and the Catholic Church has investigated many of these sightings by examining artifacts and speaking to the people who may have witnessed these apparitions.

Directions:
Research one of the many sightings of Mary listed below and complete the following assignment. Do not use Wikipedia for your research. Please do not just cut and paste your answers. Use your own words and follow CUPS (capitalization, usage, punctuation, spelling) guidelines to complete the assignment. When you have completed the assignment, review the Assignment Reminder Checklist, revise as necessary, mark the assignment as completed, and turn it in to Google Classroom.

YOU MUST GET YOUR TOPIC APPROVED BEFORE BEGINNING YOUR ASSIGNMENT AS EACH STUDENT SHOULD BE RESEARCHING A DIFFERENT EVENT. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHO YOU WILL BE CHOOSING AND HAVE A SECOND CHOICE IN MIND IN CASE YOUR CHOICE IS TAKEN.

You will have two class periods to work on this assignment. It is due tomorrow at 3:30 PM.

E-Learning Religion Class for May 5th and May 6th

Good afternoon!

Since we have been discussing how The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe may be a Christian allegory, we will now further explore this concept by identifying connections between the book and Bible Scripture.

YOU HAVE TWO RELIGION PERIODS TO COMPLETE THIS ASSIGNMENT. YOU WILL WORK ON IT BOTH TODAY AND TOMORROW.

Assignment:
Read and summarize the Bible Scriptures in the right-hand column of the handout. Once you have done so, you will be drawing a conclusion as to how these symbols specifically support a Christian allegory. Explain your reasons, using specific examples from the story and scripture. If you do not have your Bible with you at home, you should look up the passages online.

When you have completed the assignment, check your Assignment Reminder Checklist, make any necessary corrections, mark it as completed, and turn it in on Google Classroom.

NOTE: This assignment should not be completed in one class period, as it involves gathering and analyzing information from multiple sources and compiling your findings in a short essay.

Enjoy your afternoon!

Good afternoon!

In the midst of this COVID-19 crisis, we are more aware than ever that healthcare workers are truly heroes. Wednesday is Nurses Appreciation Day, so I thought that we could let Mrs. Knuth know how special she is to us.

Assignment:
For today's assignment, you will be creating a sign, card, or letter to let Mrs. Knuth know how much we appreciate her kindness and dedication. If you have markers and art supplies at home, you can make this project even more special. You may also upload photos and clipart from the Internet. Just work with what you have available.

Please create your sign, card, or letter, take a picture of it or scan it, and send it to me. I will forward them all to Mrs. Knuth. If you want to write your letter on a Google Doc, you may do so as well. Take your time and do your best work.

By the way, before I left the building in March, I made sure that I delivered your St. Patrick's Day cards and thank you notes to the staff. They were so happy to get your notes. Even though they are not looking for accolades, it is always nice to let people know they are appreciated.

Thank you for living your faith and sharing your kindness!

Hello! Happy Wednesday!

Since you completed a lesson yesterday that the other Religion class spread over two days, today is a "feel good" day. Please watch the videos below and respond to the following:

Think of a defining moment in your life when you started to understand something major about yourself. Who was involved in this revelation (like in the video "Be a Mr. Jensen")? You may share in a class or private comment.

Remember, you are someone's everything!

Have a remarkable day!

Good afternoon!

Today you are going to watch a video that summarizes many of the Bible stories we have covered this year. Think back to when we created our Bible timelines.

Assignment #1:
Watch the "Bible in Five Minutes" video. This is an amusing video that covers the history of the Bible in less than five minutes. Enjoy the creativity of the writer/animator while recalling many of the stories in the Bible.

Assignment #2:
Pretend you work for a publishing company and have been assigned the job of writing the back cover for the Bible.
The company wants you to describe it as an adventure to get middle school students interested in reading the greatest book in the adventure genre. Create a back cover book review of the Bible like you see on many novels. Remember, the Bible is the greatest book ever written. Your review should include the following:

An explanation of how the authors of the Bible were inspired by God.
Highlights from at least three Bible stories. Be specific with names, places, and events.
Quotes from other authors praising the Bible. Obviously, these can be made up.
Any other creative information or illustrations you would like to add.

I have also included a template for your Bible back cover assignment.

Take a walk today and enjoy the sunshine!

Good morning!

Well, I don't know about you, but I think life has been a little stressful lately. I have faith that God is with us and that we are all going to get through these trying times and become more resilient individuals and Christians.

Close your door, turn down your lights, and take time to watch the meditation video below. I have also included another video with a song that calms me when I am feeling anxious.

When you have completed your meditation and listened to the song, go hug someone in your home, take a selfie with that person, and send it to me. Smile! Then, mark your assignment as completed in Google Classroom.

For today's lesson, we will be talking about resilience. What is resilience, you ask? Resilience is the ability to recover quickly from difficulties. During this trying time in your life, you are building resilience that will help you cope with many difficulties in the future. Many times, our faith strengthens our resilience when we feel overwhelmed.

E-Learning Class for March 30th (Fifth Week of Lent)

Good afternoon,

We hope you enjoyed your spring break and are rested and ready to go! Today we are going to get back to work on the Stations of the Cross. Because we cannot be together to act out the stations as originally planned, you are going to video record your part and email it to Mrs. Clark.

Then, Mrs. Clark will make a full video movie for the school to watch online. It will include the wonderful script Mrs. Olmstead helped you write, the music you picked out, beautiful pictures of the Stations of the Cross, and the most important part, your video clips leading our school in Lenten prayer and reflection. It will be a wonderful gift from you to your HFCA family.

As you look over the revised script below you will see everyone has been assigned a part to read.

Please keep these guidelines in mind when recording your video:

This is a religious video and should show your love and respect for Jesus.
Practice your part. If it is short, memorize it. If it is long, look up while reading.
Wear a solid shirt without any words, pictures, or symbols and a neat pair of pants.
Find a nice place in your home for the background of your video.
You may stand or sit in a chair (possibly at a dining room table).
Please check the quality of your recording such as lighting, sound, and clarity.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Gannon and Mrs. Olmstead

E-Learning Class for April 1st

Hello,

As we continue our Lenten journey I would like to fill in a few gaps in what you know about the life of Jesus. We know Jesus was in the desert for 40 days to prepare himself to fulfill God’s plan. We also know Jesus was condemned to death, was crucified, and died. But what happened in between these events? Well, after Jesus recovered from his time in the desert he started his ministry, spreading the Word of God. In order to do this, Jesus needed helpers, the disciples. You learned a little about how he called the disciples yesterday.

Today you will learn about the different aspects of Jesus’ ministry:
Jesus traveled all over Galilee.
Jesus proclaimed God’s Word.
Jesus taught in the synagogues.
Jesus cured illnesses.
Jesus performed miracles.
Jesus told parables.

Assignment #1:
Go to the Gospel of Matthew and skim the bold headings in chapters 5- 20.
These passages explain what Jesus did during his ministry.
Find each passage below in the Gospel of Matthew.
Write the heading of the passage.
Read the passage.
Label passage: Cure, Parable, Miracle, or Teaching. Hint: use each choice twice.

Please access the document below to complete this assignment. Once you have completed the assignment, make sure you type your name at the top, turn in the assignment to Google Classroom, and mark it as completed.

Assignment #2:
Click on the video link below and watch Jesus performing his greatest miracle.

E-Learning Class for March 31st

Hello,

Please make sure you send your Stations of the Cross video to Mrs. Clark by this Friday, April 3rd.

Our Lenten journey continues as we grow closer to Jesus by learning about his life as we study the Gospels. Today, we are going to explore what Jesus did after he recovered from His 40 days in the desert and before He was condemned to death, crucified, and died.

Jesus’ Ministry Begins:
After Jesus recovered from his 40 days in the desert, He had to move forward with God’s plan.
The first thing Jesus needed to do to start his ministry was to find people to help Him with His work.

Assignment #1:
Watch the video below (Jesus Calls the Disciples) to get inspired to learn about Jesus and the disciples. Enjoy!

Assignment #2:
The four Gospels give different accounts of how Jesus called the first disciples.
While you read the passages, think about how brave the disciples were to follow Jesus.
Read Matthew 4: 18-22, Mark 1: 16-20, Luke 5: 1-11, and John 1: 35-51

Assignment #3:
Meet Jesus’ Twelve Disciples
Use the clues and the Bible verses in parenthesis to write the names of the disciples.
Mark your work as completed and post in Google Classroom. See the attachment below for the actual assignment.

Dear Class,

Today we are going to continue our Lenten journey by discovering which of the Gospels include the 40 days Jesus was in the desert. You will also compare the passages to find similarities and differences. You will need a Bible. If you do not have a Bible at home you can use your computer to find the passages. Please do your best to complete the work within 30 minutes, your regular class time. I ask that you send your assignments to me through Google Classroom or share your Google document with me at [email protected].
