Good morning!
Today, we will have a Zoom class at 11:00. We will be discussing how we can share our poetry projects and how the curriculum for rest of the year will be laid out. Be on time. Attendance is mandatory!
Those of you who did not complete your i-Ready Reading Practice yesterday (as it was assigned during class time) and pass at least one lesson, need to complete it by Thursday morning at 9:00 AM; otherwise, it will be marked as LATE. I provided specific class time for you to work on this assignment yesterday. I will no longer be sending reminder emails for this assignment because you already know that you have i-Ready practice every week.
Also, J. K. Rowling has created a very cool interactive Harry Potter Hub. This looks like fun, even if you're a muggle! See the link below.
I will see you at 11:00!
Have a great day!

In our Zoom session yesterday, some of you were still have difficulty with the concept of allusion, which is a reference to a past person, place, thing (work or art or written piece), or idea.
For example, in the novel, Refugee, the chapters with Josef make reference to Biblical concepts and people like the Promised Land, Noah, and Moses. The reader needs to understand these allusions to better understand the meaning in the story. Isabel's story alludes to many musical concepts in Cuban history, and Mahmoud's story makes reference to facets of Islam.
In the novel, The Giver, the author wrote about a red apple, which we decided was an allusion to the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and how they disobeyed God and ate from the Tree of Knowledge.
Literature contains thousands upon thousands of allusions such as referring to the Mona Lisa, Helen of Troy, Bacchus, Chronos, and the list goes on and on. Have a greater understanding of these allusions is essential to our reading enjoyment and comprehension.
I have attached a reference document that may further enhance your understanding of the concept of allusion.

Good morning!
Today, you are going to read and analyze "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost. I have included links to Robert Frost reading his poem, the actual poem, and some hints as to how it might be interpreted. You also need to go a step further and discuss how the poem relates to the story The Outsiders.
Assignments #1 & #2:
Listen to and read the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost. Analyze the structure and literary terms on the poem document I have provided by marking similes, metaphors, alliteration, rhyme scheme, etc. You may use the website I have provided for help.
Then, read the "Nothing Gold Can Stay" exemplar I have provided. I have already shown you how the analysis should begin. In this analysis, you will be showing how the poem relates to The Outsiders. I have provided a Student Analysis Template. This is where you will write how the poem relates to the story.
Once you you have completed both assignments, check your Assignment Reminder Checklist, make any necessary changes, mark as completed, and turn in to Google Classroom.
Assignment #3:
If you have time, work on i-Ready Reading practice. You need to log at least 45 minutes and pass at least one lesson. I have also posted your No Red Ink assignment for this week. Both of these assignments are due on Sunday night at 11:59 PM.
Assignment #4:
Don't forget to look over your The Outsider Vocabulary #1 words. You will have a quiz tomorrow.
Tomorrow, you will be taking the quiz, reading chapter six, and completing any outstanding work (like No Red Ink and/or i-Ready Reading practice).
Enjoy this magnificent, sunny day!

Good morning! We will still have a quick Zoom call today at 11:30 to go over any questions you may have about the quiz. Please be on time. Attendance is mandatory!
Once again, I have attached a Kahoot to help you study for your Literary Terms and Poetic Devices quiz. I have included ALL the literary terms we have reviewed this year. Please play the practice Kahoot several times. The PIN number is 06658756. Contact me if you have any questions. Also, make sure you review the Poetry PowerPoint presentation as well.
Study this morning for your Google Forms quiz. I will post it this afternoon by sharing it with you, so look for an email. You will take this quiz on the honor system. Please do not use your notes or the Internet. You will need to complete and submit the quiz today by 3:30 PM.
Once again, if you would like an actual copy of our new novel for next week (versus just the online version), please let me know by sending me a message in Google comments. So far, I have received only five requests. I will be delivering the books on the weekend, so I need to know by tomorrow morning at the latest. I will only deliver books to students who request them.
Today is supposedly William Shakespeare's birthday (in the year 1564). Historians are not certain because record keeping was not always accurate. Did you know that many modern books, plays, and movies are based on Shakespearean works? Also, Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets. All of them have the same rhyme scheme, which is ABABCDCDEFEFGG. You will need to know the definition of rhyme scheme for your quiz.

Good morning! Happy Monday.
Since some of you are still having difficulty completing your i-Ready Ready practice and No Red Ink assignments on time, I am assigning them this morning. You will need to work on the following assignments today during your BLOCK language arts class. I am trying to help some of you better organize your time.
Please continue working on your poetry projects this morning. Some of you may need to revise your work per my comments. We will be sharing these poems tomorrow.
First of all, your presentation should have more than two slides. I would think that five would be the minimum. If you just use a regular template in Google Slides that really does not add to your presentation. Check the rubric. You need visuals and sound. Pull in some nice pictures or draw your own. Do not just provide a link to another YouTube presentation. Take your time and have some fun with this project. Be creative! Wow me! Maybe some of you can try stop-motion animation.
We will be presenting these on Tuesday!
Poetry Project: Assignment #1 (This is same assignment I posted on Friday.)
Choose a meaningful poem (with a minimum of 14 lines) and create a presentation to share with the class. You must include the title, author, and text of the poem in your presentation. It must also include visuals and audio would be preferable as well (even if you record your own voice reciting the poem). Please do not just choose song lyrics and lip sync.
Some suggestions for the medium of your presentation include the following:
iMovie
Google Slides
Prezi
Flipgrid (I will create a link for this medium this morning)
PowerPoint
Stop Motion Animation software
Have fun with this project. Your poem may be thought-provoking or humorous. Just make sure you choose a selection that is meaningful to you--anyone from Shel Silverstein to Shakespeare. Follow the guidelines in the rubric below.
Please watch the video below for an example of how your presentation could look and sound.
"The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Also, please check the links to other poems that I posted on Friday.
Assignment #2:
Work on i-Ready Reading Practice for at least 45 minutes. You must also pass at least one lesson. I will check this afternoon to make certain everyone logged at least 45 minutes of i-Ready Reading time. If you complete a lesson before logging 45 minutes, you must still continue until you reach your time limit. If you do not complete a lesson in 45 minutes, continue until you do so. I will be checking in just in case someone is taking an unusual amount of time to complete the assignment. I may ask you to take a break, as I do not want any of you to get frustrated with your reading practice.
Assignment #3:
If you complete assignments 1-2 within your 90-minute class time, begin working on your No Red Ink assignments. You have a practice session and a quiz. Please look at the lesson or contact me if you are having difficulty with the practice session. Only work until your 90-minute class period and then move on to your next class.
Have a great day!

Good morning! After visiting will you yesterday on Zoom, I decided to rework our poetry lesson for today. Although you need to learn how to analyze poetry, I would also like you to appreciate its ability to help up see the world from a different perspective.
Assignment #1:
Please watch the videos below. I posted them yesterday as well.
Assignment #2:
Read and listen to "O Captain! My Captain!" by Walt Whitman. You may want to print out a copy of the poem if you have a printer at home. Record the rhyme scheme look at the structure of the poem. Begin annotating the poem for any literary elements you may find. I have attached a list of some of the possibilities below.
Hint: This poem is about Abraham Lincoln, so you might have to do some research to find out more about the historical background of his presidency. There is also an analysis section for this poem on the website I have provided.
Assignment #3:
Using the information you have annotated, complete a SOAPSTONE analysis (also posted below). You may need to rewatch the video from Tuesday's class where I talked about this concept. I have also included another copy below.
When you have completed your assignments, please turn them in on Google Classroom and mark them as completed. Some of you may have to take a picture of your work or convert it to a pdf so that I can actually read your document.
This work is due tomorrow at 10:30 AM.

Poetry Selection: Science-Fiction Cradlesong by C.S. Lewis
Before you read the selection, please watch the video links below. What is poetry? What is its purpose? Poetry helps us see the world from a different perspective.
Poetry can take many forms and cover almost any topic. In this selection, C.S. Lewis writes a science fiction poem about space. This author may sound familiar, as he wrote the fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia.
Please make sure you listen to the short blurbs on the background and author before you listen to the poem.

Welcome back!
Although we will still be working on some short reading passages, this week we will focus on poetry, as April is National Poetry month. We will be reading and analyzing different types of poetry. I know that some of you might be thinking that poetry is boring or that it does not relate to you at all. Just remember, all the songs you listen to are lyrical poems, so, if you listen to music, you are appreciating poetry as well.
Please watch the videos below for instructions BEFORE beginning your assignments. There is one for E-Learning Recommendations and one for the There Will Come Soft Rains lesson.
Assignment #1:
Read the poem "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Sara Teasdale. Look for specific literary elements that the author uses such as imagery (words that appeal to the senses), alliteration, simile, metaphor, personification, etc. Either print the poem out, or make notes directly to your Google Doc below. You must share your notes with me on Google Classroom.
Assignment #2:
Choose a poem that you would like to analyze. The tone can be serious, thought-provoking, humorous, etc. The poem should be at least 14 lines long (which is the length of a Shakespearean sonnet). Anything shorter will be difficult to analyze thoroughly. You must share a copy of the poem with me on Google Classroom. I have included a link to Poets.org in case you have difficulty finding a poem. Just click on "find poems" in the seach bar. You do not have to join the website.
Tomorrow we will work on a specific method of analyzing poetry. We will have a Zoom class at 2:45. Attendance is mandatory.
NOTE:
Even though I provided daily reminders and follow-up emails, some of you did not log 45 minutes of i-Ready Reading practice last week. The system has already rolled over and you lost an opportunity for easy points. This week, you will need to log 45 minutes of i-Ready Reading practice and pass at least one lesson. Please take advantage of the fact that tomorrow is a lighter day than normal and use your "homeroom" time wisely.

Due:
Read the selection "A Young Tinkerer Builds a Windmill" and complete the Vocabulary and Word Study and Word Study: Etymology practice.
Vocabulary Concept:
Etymolygy is the study of the origin of a word--the story of a word and where it came from. We have already talked about this concept before in class.
For example, the word quarantine comes from the Latin quadraginta (which means forty). Italian is a romance language that came from Latin, and later the Italians kept any ships suspected of carrying disease in isolation for forty days. Thus, the concept of quarantine came about when ships from plague-striken countries came to Italy. Oddly enough, many time these quarantines did not help because the rats on the ships were actually carrying disease, and when the ships came into the harbor the rats would come on the land and continue to spead disease.
Watch the Etymology and Surprising Origins of Words video below.
Then, complete the Vocabulary and Word Study and Word Study: Etymology practice.
I have also included the trailer for a movie that was made based upon the story of William Kamkwamba. If you have the time, watch The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, which is the true inspirational story of how William helped his village survive despite a severe energy crisis. You can find this film on Netflix. I highly recommend this movie; it is appropriate for the entire family.
Also, remember to complete your two No Red Ink assignments and log at least 45 minutes on i-Ready Reading (and complete at least one lesson). You have today and tomorrow to complete this work.

Happy Monday! This is a short week, so let's get started . . .
When people face adversity, many times they use humor to cope with their emotions and help others to be more comfortable with their situation. In today's selection, Aimee Mullins writes her story by using hyperbole and other forms of humorous writing as well.
Today's Figurative Language Concepts:
Hyperbole: a deliberate overstatement or exaggeration used for comic effect (I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse.)
Absurdity: a form of hyperbole that takes a normal situation to an extreme
Comic Diction: a form of hyperbole that uses clever turns of phrase and humorous images to amuse and inform
Assignment #1:
Click on The World's Greatest Hyperbole Lesson Play below, scroll down the page, and watch the video to help you with today's assignments. You may also read the additional information of the website.
Then, watch the Windows Media Player video below for a brief lesson on how to identify hyperbole and complete today's assignments that deal with this topic.
Assignment #2:
Read "A Work in Progress" and complete the Text Questions and Analyze Craft and Structure (Hyperbole). Be sure to look at the resources for hyperbole BEFORE completing the work. Also, annotate examples of hyperbole from the reading selection and fill them in on the hyperbole practice sheet below.
When you have completed all work, turn it into Google Classroom, and mark it as completed.
NOTE: I have already posted your No Red Ink assignments for this week. They are due on Thursday at 3:30 PM, as this is a short week and Easter break starts on Friday.

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is considered to be the most realistic depiction of the Great Depression by any fictional literary work. While you are reading this excerpt, contemplate the following questions:
What is it like to leave one place and start your life over someplace else? What might be the hardest part of leaving your life behind and starting over? Now, imagine how this would be if your family was also facing financial hardship as well.
Assignments:
Read the excerpt from The Grapes of Wrath, complete the Concept Vocabulary and Word Study, and the Comprehension Check questions I have posted in Google Classroom. Please turn in completed work in Google Classroom.
IMPORTANT REMINDER:
Remember to type your name on your paper, write in complete sentences (including end punctuation), and run spell-check and/or the edit feature in Google Docs.
Homework:
If you have not yet done so, complete today's assignments and post them to Google Classroom. They are due tomorrow.
You may also work on your three No Red Ink assignments and i-Ready Reading. They are due on Sunday at 11:59 PM.

Teams Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud will be working together to research information about their specific character and time period and present their knowledge in specific outputs. You will have some time to work on this project during class and plan the timeline of your overall project. The final project will not be due until March 31st, which is after Spring Break, but we will be completing our reading and class discussion by March 19th. Please use your team and individual time wisely, as some aspects of the project will be graded as a group and others individually. The compelling stories of Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud can teach us so much, if we are willing to listen and learn.
Due:
Watch the Bethany Hamilton video before beginning this unit. I have also included an audio version of "Against the Odds" in this assignment.
Due:
Welcome back! I hope you enjoyed some rest and relaxation last week and that you didn't go too stir crazy staying at home.
We will have a quick Zoom class today at 10:40 to check in and discuss the expectations for the week. You should have received an email invitation to this event. Attendance is mandatory.
After reading Refugee and gaining a better understanding of the unbelievable challenges others have faced throughout history and watching our current global crisis unfold, our next unit (Facing Adversity) is both timely and appropriate.
