Buckstaff Assignments

Third graders, you will be making an art piece for your 4th grade teacher! This is a way for Mrs. Liesenberg and Mrs. Toussaint to get to know you! What could you do? Anything you can think of..write and perform a song, make up a dance, build a life size sculpture of you out of boxes and other recyclables, make a painting or drawing that represents you, write an acrostic poem with your first and last name. Attached below are two examples to help get your creative juices flowing. This is due Wed., June 3 and you will be sharing it with the class. We can't wait to see what you create! ;)

"Cursivers" write the symbol name for the number key on the line. For example, the 1 key is also the exclamation mark key when you hold down the 1 key and the shift key at the same time!

Please read the directions in the document. You'll write a letter to someone pretending you are somewhere in the world. In your letter, tell what month it is (it doesn't need to be April! Choose whatever month) and tell what the weather is like. Use the table from yesterday!

Super Scientists, today we start LINE OF INQUIRY 2!!! This is our second section of our Earth's Weather and Climate unit. Today you will see how different countries have different types of weather and different weather patterns. You will learn how to use a table to identify a country’s season in a given month. Mrs. Biere and her helper have a great video to help you! :)

For our final day with Two Bobbies, you'll see three columns on the left. Then look at the boxes on the right. They all have detail straight from the text. Drag each of the boxes to one of the columns that matches the detail.
For example, I read the detail, "...much damage and confusion..."
Does that tell about the relationship between the two Bobbies? No.
Does it tell about what people did to help after the hurricane? No.
Does it describe or give facts about the hurricane? YES! So I would drag that box to the correct column.

Wonderful writers, today you will be reviewing the parts of a letter. We have done this several this times, I know, but it has been several weeks. Study the parts carefully. You will be graded on including the 5 parts of a letter, using the commas correctly, capital letters and end marks. The body should have two sentences. One sentence thanking the person. A second sentence with a detail to support your first sentence. Your thank you note could be to a parent, grandparent, sibling, friend. Please take a picture of this and send it me. I can't wait to read your letters!

Today, you'll spend 30-40 minutes researching your weather hazard! Open the document, find some resources (on page 3 of the document), then type in facts in your own words.

Clever "cursivers", practice writing the dates with remembering to include periods and commas. Remember to capitalize greetings and closings.

Wonderful writers, please read the captions under the maps on p.79. You do not need to trace over the sentences. Finish the sentence explaining what political maps show and add another one. Then do the same for the physical maps, finish the sentence and add one more.

This week for reading, we'll be reading a picture book about Hurricane Katrina. Before we read it, we are going to be part of a collaborative document where we learn the meaning of vocabulary words found in the book.
Please open the document. You'll see everyone should be on the same document. There are 9 vocabulary words. For each word, we want a definition, synonym, and example.
Your job is to contribute to 3 of the sections. That doesn't mean 3 words, but just 3 sections.
Make sure you write your name in parentheses.

If all the sections are done, you can write in a section that already has an answer, but give another answer. For example, if it's the word "angry" and someone put "irritate" for a synonym, you can add "annoyed" as another synonym. Do NOT erase any of your classmates' work, please!

ALSO, please look back at this document AT THE END OF THE DAY or EARLY TOMORROW MORNING. Write the 9 words on another piece of paper and study the definitions, synonyms, and examples. We'll have a Zoom meeting Wednesday and have a trivia game with these words!

Hi Clever Cursive Writers! On page 76, trace over the examples of the capital letters first. Then on the lines below write the capital letter connecting to the lowercase letter. Next, do the capitals that do not connect. Finally, practice the capital letters at the bottom of the page.

For today, you'll make 2 rain gauges. A rain gauge shows how much rain falls in a certain area during a certain time. Some of you might have one at home.

Then review these vocab words for Bunnicula Ch. 9: resolved (feeling strong determination to do something), dialect (a form of language), obsolete ( no longer used), narrative ( a story that is told or written), reluctance (a feeling showing doubt). Make a vocab. square from one of these words or one from the chapter. Read Ch. 9 p 92-98. Answer the questions for Ch.7-9 in your packet on p 30. Can you believe it is finished? Be on the look out for a final activity tomorrow. :)

First, prepare a piece of notebook paper to take notes on each video clip. You will have 6 sections on your paper. Label each section with one of these weather hazards: Blizzards, Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Thunderstorms, Floods, and Ice Storms. Under each weather hazard write 2-3 challenges or problems people have with this weather hazard and write 2-3 effects the weather hazard has on buildings and structures.
