Due:
Earlier this week, we learned about and practiced personification. Remember that is means giving human qualities or characteristics to nonhuman things. "The train waited patiently for the passengers to board," is an example. Finding the examples is often much easier than writing out own, but let's give it a try on the attached doc. Be creative and use expected 5th grade CUPS.
Due:
Today you will learn whether matter changes when you mix, heat, or cool matter it.

Idioms are another wonderful way to add interest and description to your writing. I had trouble deciding if I considered this a reading or writing assignment. Truly it is both! We need to understand idioms when we read and use them to improve our writing! Watch this video to learn more about idioms and then complete the practice.
Due:
Hi friends, I was sure that I posted a doc for you to complete your reflection of the Cool Chemistry experiment assignment. Yes, I see a couple of you have shared a doc with me and I see nothing in Classroom.
If you already shared, please copy and paste your response onto the Google doc here in classroom. You need a COMPLETE heading. I really should not need. to state this, as you always are supposed to have a heading on your work, but many of you did not put it on our Rosary Reflection and I stated in the directions that you needed one. It also should go without saying that you should always use 5th grade expectations for writing, explain means detail, and do your best.
Also, if you already shared with me, look at the expectations on this doc and make sure your work reflects these expectations.

Reread the poem, "A Light Exists in Spring" by Emily Dickinson paying close attention to the way she uses personification. Answer the questions on the second half of the worksheet. The first half is X'd out because you did it last week.
Due:
Personification is yet another, form of figurative language that enhances our writing and reading. We can better relate to nonliving objects when we give them human qualities. As all figurative language does, it makes or reading more fun and easier to understand and relate to and our own writing more interesting. Watch the video, then give it a try with the practice.
Due:

Due:
Carefully read and follow the directions on the slides. Please note the due date and the points. This assignment is worth more points than a religion assignment is usually worth due to its length. Due:
Read the examples of Pet Peeve Poems several times each. They are written by older students, so they will give you quality examples. Each time, think about the pet peeve the author is writing about. What it is and how the poet creates feelings in you with the words chosen. Think about which one you relate to the most. What words, phrases and figurative language really speak to you. Take your time, poems are meant to create feelings in the reader, be aware of what you are feeling. Sometimes the feels are laughter, empathy, peace, anger, sympathy, appreciation...
Then carefully and completely answer the questions that follow. Please really try to make Kami work for you, because you will need to highlight words and phrases in the poem. If you need to, you can print these two pages, do the work and then upload. I would GREATLY appreciate it if you took the time to try and upload your work back into the assignment on Classroom.

Attached you will find a copy of your words for this week. They are tricky, PLEASE keep up on the practice daily. You will not be required to spelling them on the test, but you will be required to know what they mean. Trust me, there are some confusing words here. I have also posted a quizlet to use for further practice. I HIGHLY suggest you make sure you practice daily. Challenge yourself to USE the words throughout the day, even if it is a random sentence out loud to a parent or sib.
Due:
Each day, beginning this week, you will read for 20-30 minutes, about 20 pages. You will then read through the choices of response sentence starters, or come up with one of your own if you have something pressing that really grabbed you to write about, and write about your reading.
I can not stress enough, that this is not a one sentence response. Please look at the requirements in the slides. The rubric is a direct reflection of these expectations. All writing should reflect 5th grade, end of the year work. The purpose of this is to read a great book and connect that to your writing. You must include specific details and examples. Think of our color coded paragraphs. Each day your paragraph should begin with that "green" general sentence stem, followed by a yellow sentence. Yellow is slow down and give a detail. Followed by several red sentences explaining in detail with examples about your reading. Then closing with a green concluding sentences that circles back up to the first sentence. So your responses will have at least 5-6 sentences.
You will be graded on your writing and your thinking. Is your writing clear? Do you use interesting words? Cups? Do you show thinking and insight about your book and connect text evidence and thinking?
I will make comments when I read your responses daily. Please take the time to read them and then apply improvements the next day.
As always, I am here for you to help in any way I can.
These are worth ten points per day. I will repost only a short version of the assignment with the ten points each day. I will not repost the slides because you will already have access to them. We will see how this works and then we may have to make some changes to how it is posted if it isn't working.

I have posted two sets of slides. One set has the reading on it. Please read and think about the phrase, "You see with the eyes of faith." How can we encourage others through these words? What can we do? Who can we thank? The second slide has a slide for each person. On a piece of paper, write those words. Then draw, decorate, write... whatever you can do to show what those words mean or how they can encourage others. Like we did with our Arnold sketch, take a photo and put it on your slide. I can't wait to see your wonderful work.
Due:
Good Luck! You got this! Take your time. PLEASE REREAD YOUR ESSAY QUESTION BEFORE SUBMITTING!!! Remember you are on a computer, so there should not be spelling errors. Make sure you use text evidence and explain your thinking. Best Work!!!

Today we are going to have some fun drawing the Character of Arnold. In chapter 3 Gary Paulsen describes Arnold in great detail. On a piece of plain white paper, (or notebook paper if that is all that you have) draw Arnold. Try to fill most of the paper, rather than a tiny little sketch. Make sure you carefully follow the description in the book. While we can use our imagination to visualize characters, we need to include the details that the author provides us. Paulsen provides us with a very detailed description of this character.
On the outside around the picture of Arnold write words that describe him based on what you know so far in the book. You may use character traits, things he says, or words to describe his appearance.
When you are done, use your computer, phone, or ipad to take a photo of your drawing. Add your photo onto the slides show below on the slide with your name at the top. (I have already put names on the slides, so find yours) Keep your original picture somewhere safe for use later in the book.
Have fun! Make sure to use details and colors as describes in the book.

Today we are going to be thinking about the challenges that characters in a book face and how they deal with them. On the attached slid, please choose one character from the book Lawn Boy and DESCRIBE a challenge he is or has faced. (Remember the word DESCRIBE means to give an account in words of (someone or something), including all the relevant characteristics, qualities, or events: the man was described as tall, clean-shaven, and with short dark hair. THEN DESCRIBE how the challenge was resolved. Please remember, that whenever we write, we ALWAYS use correct CUPS, reread it in a whisper voice to make sure it makes sense, and fully explain our thinking. You must complete and submit this through Google Classroom!
Due:
Attached find your Lawn Boy work for chapter 3. Please do it through the link in Google Classroom. Remember to reread your work to make sure it is complete.
