Good morning!

Z for Zoom off into 2nd Grade!

Dear Families,

Can you believe it is our last day of the school year?! Whew! What a unique year!

Today will be our last Zoom meeting. We have a little surprise for our special goodbye meeting, so I hope everyone is able to make it. Families are more than welcome.

I also have a request - could you please let me know if you have a book report book and bag or any library books in your home? Some children may have returned their books early, and I am trying to get an idea of the number of books still out. Please remember that these items, along with the math textbook, are due when you pick up your student belongings on Thursday or Friday.

Hopefully the weather will hold up and we'll be able to have our drive-by Good-bye at noon. We're looking forward to this special good bye! We would like to thank all of our families for the opportunity to work with your children and to be a part of your lives. We have really enjoyed our unique year together! We hope that you have an exciting yet relaxing summer! We look forward to seeing you again in the fall - please come back to visit whenever you can!

God Bless you!

Mrs. Moynihan and Mrs. Connelly

Fun Friday Math Games - Choose 1

  1. Make Ten is an easy to play and fun math card game which teaches kids ways to make 10 with addition and subtraction.

How to play Make Ten:

Remove the face cards from a deck of playing cards and place the deck, face down on the table.
Each player chooses 5 cards and places the cards in front of him.
The first player uses the 5 cards to create equations in which the sum equals ten. For example, if I have 9, 3, 6, 7, 1,  I could use 9, 1 and 7, 3.
After making as many equations as possible, player sets aside the used cards and play passes to the next player.
Play continues with players refilling their hands to 5 cards at the start of each turn.
Whoever uses the most cards by the end of the deck wins.

     2. Race to zero - see attached directions

  Religion

  • Give Mom and Dad or Grandma and Grandpa a hug and tell them one reason you love them.

    • Our focus this week, once again, is the iReady diagnostic. Your child's web page should be different than it has been, as the diagnostic has been "turned on." Please allow your child to complete this independently. iReady was created so that children should not need any help as they answer questions.
    • It is an adaptive assessment, designed to provide teachers with insight into student needs to differentiate instruction.
    • Some questions will be difficult, since it is responsive to a child’s action, and the test will adjust accordingly.
    • Therefore, it is important to allow your child to work alone.
    • Please let your child know that and that they should just try their best.
    • The test takes about 45 minutes to complete. Therefore, please have your child work on this in more than one session of about 15 to 20 minutes each. The math diagnostic does not have to be completed all in one day. The assessment will save any progress made. If you notice your child getting very restless, please take a break and begin again the next day.

Hello Mrs. Moynihan,

I heard back from my brother's group home late last night.  They would LOVE to receive cards or pictures from the kids. Apparently they were just on CBS news where they were talking about the home.  If there is some time when you think it would be appropriate to invite the class to send cards or pictures  - it would be greatly appreciated!!  The information about the home and the address is below:

Kenny's uncle lives in an Anixter group home in Chicago. He is deaf and has autism.  He lives with 7 other individuals in his group home.  Because of COVID-19, they, like all of us, are isolated in their home together.  Their families are not permitted to visit them and they are unable to go out at all.  Maybe we can do something to bring a little joy.  It would mean a great deal to them if they were to receive pictures from HFCA kids.   So..if you have some time to create a joyful picture to share, it would be greatly appreciated.  Please sign the picture with your first name and Holy Family Catholic Academy.  You can send your pictures to:

Hello, I hope this email finds everyone well and healthy!

The nursing director at my hospital (Northwestern Delnor Hospital) had reached out to me to ask if my kids would be interested in making/writing cards for the Emergency room staff during this time of high volume, high risk patients and in a very stressful environment. The staff is being exposed to COVID 19 on a daily basis, working with less supplies then what they need, and in some cases having to self quarantine from their own families to keep their families safe and continue servicing the community!

I, of course, said YES!

They really need support and could use a pick me up during this time to say the least.

If you would like to join us in showering them with some encouraging words or simply a beautiful card/ picture please let me know!

I think for now it is best to just mail them at:

Northwestern Delnor Hospital

Emergency Room

300 Randall Rd.

Geneva, IL 60134

Please sign them with your name (1st name is fine) and the name of our school! Thank you so much.

I truly appreciate any or all support for my fellow colleagues.

Stay safe!

Assignment

Good morning!

The following assignments are for Tuesday, March 31st.

Besides Seesaw crashing in the middle of the day (during one of my word sorts), I think it went well, over all. As we keep using it and learning more about it, I think it will help us to streamline the overall process.

Please note: I will no longer be sending an email to let you know our morning meeting Zoom link, unless it is for a small group meeting. You can find the link to whole class meetings here. Also, the day’s assignments will be posted here. If you would like me to send you an email of a word document as well, please let me know. We are trying to minimize the number of emails we send out. Please know that I will really try to keep the emails down, but there are often occasions that pop up that need to be addressed in a timely manner.

If you have any questions, thoughts or concerns, please do not hesitate to email. I will be available during school hours and will do my best help.

Assignment

Good morning!

The following assignments are for Monday, March 30th.

Last week, I sent out a letter regarding a new website we will be using to collect assignments. This should make it much easier for the children to submit their work – on their own! If you did not receive a letter, please let me know and I will resend it. The children each have their own codes and there is a quick tutorial included for guidance.

This site also allows me to set up some assignments. Today, we are going to try to do a science activity on Seesaw. The children can then complete their assignment using the Seesaw web page and its various tools, such as audio and video recordings. A big thank you to those of you who have already signed in!

If you have any questions, thoughts or concerns, please do not hesitate to email. I will be available during school hours and will do my best help.

Religion

  • We are continuing our journey through the season of Lent.  Stations are places where people wait while they are going from one place to another.  A school-bus stop is like a station.  People wait at train stations or bus stations or airports.  Think of some stations where you have been.  Stations are also places where people take time to think about Jesus as he went to die on a cross.  They are "Stations of the Cross."  They show us how Jesus loved us.  You do not have to think of all the Stations of the Cross one one day.  You may want to stay at one Station with Jesus for a few days before you move to another Station.  Whatever you decide, Jesus is with you and he loves you.  (Source: Lucille Perrotta Castro).  Click here to see and reflect on the Stations of the Cross with your family.

The pyramid Math Game by Jen Wieber
First off, grab a deck of playing cards, removing the Jokers, Kings, Queens and Jacks.

Shuffle your deck and place 21 of the cards face up in a 6-row pyramid.  You should have 19 cards leftover which becomes the DRAW pile.  There are two rules that must be followed when playing this Pyramid Solitaire Game:

Only fully exposed cards can be played at any time.  That means, to start, only the bottom 6 cards can be considered until you start removing bottom cards.
You can only remove cards that equal 10, and only up to two cards at a time.  For instance, you can remove a 10, or you can remove a 6 and a 4 (because added together they equal 10), but you can't remove a 2, 4, and a 4, even though, added up, they equal 10. Continue on until all 19 cards that were not part of the original pyramid have been turned over, and when you have no more cards to work with; that is, until no other card can be combined to make a sum of ten.
