Week of 5/24

For the Week of 5/24

I hope you all enjoyed this holiday weekend and were able to connect with family and friends. We’ve also made it to our last full week of e-learning! Congratulations to our kinders and family on accomplishing this mighty task! I have enjoyed getting to know my students and their families on an entirely different level than ever before. It has made me more aware how important it is to build connections with each individual child and their family. It is a vital connection and an important lesson to learn for a rich learning environment. This will be our last week of guided reading ZOOM meetings.

Thank you to everyone for getting their child's self-portrait to me so quickly. They are adorable!  I will give you more details as soon as I receive them.

More details to come about Kindergarten Graduation. Mrs. O'Brien is creating the routing schedule based on your location. Please contact Mrs. O'Brien with any questions/concerns.

We will be administering our i-Ready READING assessment on TUESDAY, 5/26. Please allow your child independently complete this assessment for accurate data collection.

Math i-Ready will be administered on MONDAY, 6/1. Again, please allow your child independently complete this assessment for accurate data collection.

Coach Red's Virtual Field Day will be on TUESDAY, 6/2.

Opening Prayer: The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen

Finding God: Showing Our Love for the World p. 193, 194

In Matthew 22:37, Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”

What does it mean to love God with all of your heart, soul, and mind? How does it change how you treat yourself and others? Thankfully, Jesus came to earth to show us the way! In prayer, thank God for Jesus and how He loved us so much that He died on the cross to save us from our sins.

For the Week of 5/11-5/17

Thank you so much for the wonderful emails, flowers, and gift cards I received last week.  I felt so appreciated and reflected on how grateful I am for your support from the first day I arrived in late October. The love and dedication you have for your children is evident in how much they enjoy learning and charge head on to any challenge I give them. I hope you found a special way to celebrate the amazing moms in your life this Mother's Day.

We are continuing to study insects this week and I have many fun activities for  your child to complete. However, it is most important to complete the i-Ready reading/math and rereading books from our guided reading time on Raz-Kids, as well as to complete the worksheets that I send via email after our guided reading groups.

It may be rainy out, but spring is here and soon we will be seeing all the benefits of this rainy season. Let’s celebrate this time of rebirth with a two week butterfly unit! We are also beginning Chapter 14 in Math. See the attached files for the Parent Letter, Extra Practice, and Enrichment worksheets for further information and learning opportunities. There are many activities listed in our assignments this week. Please remember that Faith, Reading, and Math take priority over the other assignments. (iReady is not on Seesaw, so please don't forget to have your child complete 15 minutes of reading and 15 minutes of math each day.)

The families in this class are amazing and I know that you want the very best for your child. The first thing I observed when I began teaching in late October, was how much the whole group of kids LOVED being read to. I know you place reading in very high regard in your home, which makes my job so much easier. I trust you will have your child do what he/she can handle and not overwhelm them or yourselves. You are doing an amazing job with remote learning and this will be over soon. With God's strength, we will endure!

Special Teacher pages: Mrs. Breen – Art, Mr. Cole-Music, Senora Loyaga-Spanish, Coach Red-P.E.

Opening Prayer:

Hail Mary

Hail, Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
and blessed is the fruit of thy
womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Living Our Faith: The Great Commandment

God’s Great Commandment is from Matthew 22:37-39

https://safeYouTube.net/w/tKG8

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Ask God to fill your heart, soul, and mind with the love of Jesus. :)

Think about the people in your life that you can be the hands and feet of Jesus for.  Pray for those in your family or neighborhood that may be sick, lonely, work in a hospital, or not even be able to work. Is there something you can do for them in their time of need and suffering? Perhaps helping them clean up their yard, making them a card, or praying for them maybe something God would like you to do.

Assignment

For the Week of 4/19-4/24

I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy the sunshine this weekend. As you know, we will continue online learning until June 4. In the beginning of this journey back in March, I said I would be collecting work upon our return to school. Seeing as we will not be back, if you haven't, could you please begin taking a picture of work and upload through Seesaw and/or complete Seesaw assignments for me to be to assess your child's learning. We will be assessing work for report cards in June, so it is important for me to see samples of work each week. Not every assignment needs to be photographed, as I do not have a checklist for your child. I just would like to see a few samples each week to make sure we are moving forward, especially in writing.

Thank you for your continued cooperation with our guided reading groups. They have been very productive and I am seeing wonderful progress! In math, we are beginning Chapter 13: Patterns. There is a Parent Letter, Extra Practice, and Enrichment worksheets attached to this assignment page. I have not assigned them, but you can have your child do them at your own discretion. There are new Seesaw Math and English Language Arts activities uploaded daily, as well as books, read alouds, videos.

In regards to attendance, I do submit attendance daily, and no one has been counted absent. I have a lot of contact with your child through Zoom, as well as keeping track of students through Seesaw. I don't want to unnecessarily burden anyone with sending me a daily attendance email, as I am in daily contact with your child via the internet. If we have a Zoom meeting, you do not need to email me that you are present. As well as if your child is engaged in Seesaw on a daily basis, you do not need to email me either. Thank you for your cooperation!

WebPages your child should be engaged in over the course of the week are:

For the Week of 4/12-4/17

Thank you for having your child set up for our Zoom meetings. Through this partnership, we are  making great gains in your child’s ability to learn and comprehend text. It can be a struggle with scheduling and I am on a learning curve with Zoom. Thank you for your patience and flexibility with the meeting schedules.

For optimal use of our time during Zoom meetings, if possible, please have your child sitting in a non-swivel chair that is seated at a desk or table. Also, we will be writing during each guided reading meeting. Please have pencil/paper, or Expo/sheet protector,or wipe board ready to use at the beginning of our meeting time.

During guided reading, we are reading books from Raz-Plus/Reading A-Z, https://www.raz-plus.com/ . I have assigned the book we have read to your child on this website for your child to read again and become fluent. In addition, I will email corresponding worksheets for your child to complete after we read. In light of this, our overall assignment list is shorter and more connected to our learning in guided reading. J

Please check out Seesaw https://web.seesaw.me/ , for new weekly activities and Epic! https://www.getepic.com/ for a new book collection.

IB Unit – Let’s Celebrate Easter!

Family Daily Devotion for Holy Week

Day 1: Palm Sunday

https://youtu.be/O56CiH0dwLw

 Read aloud Mark 11:1-11

The Triumphal Entry

Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’” And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!”And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Craft: Palm Branches (refer to pictures in email)

Materials:

green construction paper

scissors

tape

Cut your construction paper in ½ inch strips about half way down the length of the paper. Roll uncut end of paper into a tube and tape. Fluff top pieces of paper where you cut into strips to create palm branch.

Day 2: Holy Monday

Read aloud Mark 11:15-18

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.” And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching.

Explain that this area of the temple was the place non-Jews could come to pray, but it had become a dirty, noisy, unworshipful place. Together, decorate a worshipful space in your home for Easter Week. Include a Bible, candles, and an area to display the items you’ll use this week. A small, bare tree branch laced with white Christmas lights makes a nice backdrop. You can review these items at the beginning of each devotion. Light the candles or turn on the lights only during devotions to keep it special and meaningful.

Day 3: Holy Tuesday

Read aloud Matthew 26:14-16

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her. But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial. And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.”

This woman gave Jesus a gift that was very precious. We can give gifts that come from our heart, too. Have each family member share something he or she can do to honor Jesus. As each person shares, spray perfume into the air or on the person. Decorate a piece of paper and form a cylinder around the perfume bottle for display at your family worship space.

 Day 4: Holy Wednesday

Read aloud Matthew 26:14-16

Judas to Betray Jesus

Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.

 You’ll need:

30 dimes.

Explain that Judas betrayed Jesus for about 120 days of wages. Let the kids count the dimes and place them at your family worship space.

Ask:

  • Was Jesus’ life on earth worth more than 30 pieces of silver? Why or why not?
  • What is the true value of Jesus’ life to our family?

Day 5: Maundy Thursday

Read aloud John 13:1-5

Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet

Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God,  rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

You’ll need:

a bowl

a bar of soap

paper towels

Jesus washed feet to show his love. Have a bowl, a bar of soap, and paper towels ready. Take turns washing each other’s hands and drying them as you express love to each other. Display the soap at your family worship space.

Day 6: Good Friday

Read aloud Mark 15:21-39

The Crucifixion

And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. And it was the third hour when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe. Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

Day 7: Holy Saturday

Read aloud Mark 15:42-47

Jesus Is Buried

And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Jesus, saw where he was laid.

You’ll need:

toilet paper

Take turns wrapping each other in toilet paper just as Jesus may have looked when prepared for burial. Talk about how the disciples might’ve felt when all their hopes seemed destroyed when Jesus died.

Ask:

What do you want to say to Jesus to thank him for dying for you?

Talk about how the burial isn’t the end of the story, but that it was a very sad day for Jesus’ friends.

 Day 8: Easter

Read aloud Luke 24:1-9

The Resurrection

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.

Resurrection Rolls Recipe (refer to pictures in email)

Roll a marshmallow (White represents Jesus and His purity) in melted butter and dip it in cinnamon and sugar.  Talk about how Jesus' body was anointed with oil and spices.  Then wrap the marshmallow inside the Crescent Roll.  The roll represents the cloth that Jesus was wrapped in. Make sure you seal all the creases really well.  Tell them about how the tomb was sealed. Then place them in the oven (at 350 degrees) for 10 minutes.  Pretend the oven is the tomb and that 3 days passes while you wait.  We talked about how hard it is to wait for something special. When the rolls have cooled let them unwrap the Crescent Roll.
It's empty! Just like the tomb!

Assignment

For the Week of 3/30-4/3 – Please complete at your own pace and share your child’s work with me via email, upload to Seesaw, or collect it for when we return. Both Mrs. Myers and I will be reviewing work turned in through Seesaw.

I will set up whole group and small group Zoom meetings. Unfortunately, not all times will be convenient for everyone. I will send out invites and hopefully we can all attend. Clearly, it is understandable if it is not possible with your schedule. As always, please email me with any questions and/or concerns. I appreciate the love and attention you are giving to your child at the challenging time. I miss my class so much and certainly will never take for granted 20 little faces looking at me for guidance, direction, and love!

Update 4/1/20: You no longer need to email me that your child is present for the day. As you email/upload pictures to Seesaw, and/or Zoom meetings, that is sufficient for a check in. In addition, as I get more comfortable with the Zoom format of teaching, I will be adding Zoom meetings with your child next week. As I mentioned, I understand that not all times will work for everyone. I have added some optional Chapter 12 extra practice and enrichment pages at the bottom of this page. I have included a file with the writing paper we use in school. If you can print it out, that would be great. Otherwise, you can draw a rectangle around the size I have made and then just a few simple lines for them to write on.(I think I meant to get journaling paper in the packet sent home, and it got overlooked some how in the mayhem.)

If you would like to show me your work, I can set up a Zoom meeting. Please email me a meeting time, I will confirm, and then email you an invite a few minutes prior.
If you choose to do any baking, science experiments, outdoor learning, etc., please feel free to email me pictures or videos! Any writing you do about your learning would be AMAZING!!
