Approaches to Learning

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Approaches to Learning (ATL) are skills designed to help students develop as independent, lifelong learners. These skills are integrated across all IB's Early, Primary, and Middle Years Programmes and focus on how students learn rather than just what they learn. The five ATL skill categories are:

  1. Thinking Skills – Critical, creative, and reflective thinking to analyze and solve problems.
  2. Communication Skills – Expressing ideas clearly in various forms and listening actively.
  3. Social Skills – Collaboration, teamwork, and conflict resolution.
  4. Self-Management Skills – Organization, time management, resilience, and emotional regulation.
  5. Research Skills – Finding, evaluating, and using information effectively.

These skills support students in becoming adaptable, self-motivated, and globally minded individuals, preparing them for success in education and beyond.
